Julie's Smile (2013) Review by seattlefilmgoer from United States
"Julie's Smile" is a new independent film from writer/director EricMattson. The film is about a mentally disturbed young woman, Julie. Onthe surface Julie is a carefree artist who seems to love everything andeveryone. But there is a darkness brewing deep inside Julie's psychewhich slowly drives her into madness.

The character of Julie is brought to life with an amazing performanceby Stacie Barra (one to watch out for). The best decision Mattson madewas casting Barra in the lead role of his film. Barra is simply perfectin the role. She is in every single scene in the film. This is no easytask for any actor. Barra rises to the challenge with the strength, courage and, most importantly, complete fearlessness. Julie is a fullydefined character. Barra brings out the deep seeded psychologicalproblems the character has as well as her everyday ordinariness. Shehas a glow around her in the happy scenes and a danger in the darkscenes. There is an unforgettable scene where she breaks down cryinghysterically which feels all too real. Not just any actor can pull offreal emotion the way Barra does in this scene and in this film. Shejust nails this role. Nails it!

Stacie Barra is clearly the backbone of the film but "Julie's Smile"boasts a strong cast across the board. A. Monnie Aleahmad is verynatural as the boyfriend. He is just right in bringing the sensitivitynecessary for the type of person who would date Julie. Becky Crawfordas the somewhat crazy, know-it-all, waitress is fall on the floorfunny. But Crawford does not only provide comic relief she alsoprovides serious, genuine protection and care for Julie when not manyothers seem to do the same.

This film is highly risky. Mattson breaks many rules in his approach tothis film. He takes his time with his scenes and allows his charactersto grow. He will go several minutes with no dialog. Mattson loves towatch his characters and wants everyone else to do so also. He refusesto acknowledge what is in reality or what is going on in Julie'sdisturbed mind. He has plenty of ambiguity which is something you don'tsee too often in film. One thing I liked about the symbolism is heallows the audience to decide what it all means. He is not cramming hisideas or any agendas down anyone's throat. He does not preach. He letsthe film speak for itself and lets the audience think for themselves. For which I was grateful. It was almost like a sigh of relief. Therisks Mattson takes pay off but this is not a film for everyone. I dofeel the art house audiences will love it but your impatient, closeminded, action obsessed audiences will not. This is a film you have tothink about while you watch. It's an "outside the box" type of film. There is a little bit of everything here. There is drama, romance, comedy, and sometimes it's even a little frightening. More than oncethe film gave me a jump.

The film also has an outstanding score from Matt Teichler to help guidethe way. Speaking of which, the brilliant music is probably the secondstrongest part of this film after Barra's incredible performance.Teichler's score enhances the mental breakdown Julie endures and ithelps take the audience with her. It is subtle when it needs to be andalmost chaotic at certain times. But it all seemed to fit the filmperfectly.

Near the end of the film there is a sequence where Julie is walkingthrough the woods and comes across a man at a typewriter. They have abrief conversation about life and the truth. It is a subtle yetbrilliantly surreal. Also the scene sums up the film in its own weirdway. During the scene (and most of the film for that matter) I felt aDavid Lynch influence. This was made abundantly clear during theclosing credits…Mattson dedicated the film to Lynch.

Overall I found Julie's Smile to be an outstanding artistic expression. This is by no means a big budget film. But Mattson and his cast haveproved they can hold their own against any filmmaker workingtoday…whether it's a big budget film or an independent film. This filmwas low on money but high on talent. I'll keep those involved in thisfilm on the lookout in the future. It was a refreshing change from yournormal run of the mill movie. Obviously Mattson set out to do somethingdifferent…and he succeeded. This is a case of a unique director'svision and the right actors to bring that vision to life.

Julie's Smile (2013) Review by Patrick O'Sullivan from United States

Erik Mattson's Julie's Smile goes where few first-time independentfilmmakers fear to tread; It relies on film's capacity for visualstorytelling to complete its narrative. Whereas most low budgetindependent dramas tend to be overridden with "cleverer than you"dialog delivered by community theater actors, Julie's Smile puts allits money on Mattson's keen directorial eye and lead actress StacieBarra's ability to carry the weight of every scene. A task sheaccomplishes with equal parts charisma and beauty. Julie does notsmirk, she smiles, and when she does it's wonderful. The onlydistraction from the film is the constant nagging question as to whyBarra isn't a full-fledged Hollywood up and coming actress. She easilyout does Juliette Lewis in The Other Sister with her portrayal of amentally handicapped young woman.

And lastly, and this just a complete and total matter of personaltaste, but the majority of Julie's Smile is shot in Chicago, andgoddamn it if it doesn't FEEL like Chicago. Mattson captures the citywell (The scene at The Exit feels like a southsiders version of EyesWide Shut). Julie's Smile is ambitious, and ultimately, overwhelminglyrefreshing.
